Using this resource in your library
This document should be catalogued in the library and be available to all staff. While this work is copyright, permission is given to librarians to make copies of the guide for use within their own library. The internet safety instructional cards are in a format that can be easily photocopied, although extra copies can be obtained from NetAlert at no cost. Electronic copies of this guide are available on the NetAlert website, at www.netalert.gov.au.
While some of the content of the guide may apply to library patrons, it is not intended that this resource be handed out to library patrons, parents or carers.
Professional development
Libraries may find it useful to introduce parts of this resource to librarians in a staged way. The guide or its parts might be introduced or discussed at staff meetings. Audiences for this guide may be trainee librarians or experienced librarians who have used the internet and want to be more informed about internet safety. Library staff are encouraged to seek the assistance of their supervisor if any difficulty arises when interpreting or applying this guide. A professional development approach could include:
- Identifying a ‘champion’ or a team within the library with an interest or responsibility for presenting the guide to staff.
- Introducing this resource and the internet safety flash card at a staff meeting, with suggestions on how librarians may use and store them.
- Referring librarians to the NetAlert website, at www.netalert.gov.au.
- Encouraging library staff to consider how best to incorporate the resource into the library.
- Evaluating and publicising the internet safety policies and technical solutions made within the library.
- Communicating and using internet safety resources with library patrons, for example, by providing the internet safety flash card at public internet access terminals.
